Obesity and Nutrient Consumption: a Rational Addiction?
Recent research shows that the dramatic rise in obesity in the United States is due more to the overconsumption of unhealthy foods than underactivity. This study tests for an addiction to food nutrients as a potential explanation for the apparent excessive consumption. A random coefficients (mixed) logit model is used to test a multivariate rational addiction model. The results reveal a particu...
متن کاملThe Multivariate Rational Addiction Model
This paper generalizes the model of Becker, Grossman, and Murphy (1994) to the multivariate case. The multivariate model generates Frisch demand functions where current consumption is related to prices of all goods, and lagged and future consumption of all goods. The theoretical restrictions are that current price effects (holding lagged and future consumption constant) are negative definite, a...

Utilizing a panel data set of 42 states over the period 1959-1994, this paper estimates a rational addiction model for liquor consumption for the US. The empirical evidence is consistent with the rational addiction hypothesis proposed by Becker and Murphy. However, the results are sensitive to the assumption of homogeneity across states or over time.
